Currently reading: Volkswagen Golf R performance pack being considered for UK

Upgrades in the pack include a higher top speed and better brakes - it will be available in Europe this year

A new video shows details of a Volkswagen Golf R Performance package that is being considered for a UK launch.

The preview on Volkswagen’s official YouTube channel shows a Golf R with an Akrapovič exhaust and suspension alterations, as well as a higher top speed and a performance brake option.

Volkswagen UK says it is an optional package that will soon be available in Europe, and it is still evaluating the possibility of offering it in the UK.

A brief description with the video says the Performance package makes the Golf R “even rawer, even less compromising and even more strong-willed”.

The video suggests a top speed of 267kph (166mph) which is up on the current Golf R’s electronically limited 155mph top speed. The upgraded brakes have drilled discs and upgraded pads, and there's also shock absorber adjustment which can offer different ride height settings. The pack also includes the front air curtains of the Golf GTI Clubsport.

At the Geneva motor show, Volkswagen had a Golf R on its stand with an Akrapovič exhaust and Pirelli Trofeo R tyres from the Lamborghini Huracán Performante.

There’s no suggestion that there is a power boost as part of the upgrades, so it will still use the same 310bhp turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine, which has a 0-62mph time of 4.6sec and works in conjunction with an all-wheel drive system.

Billed the 'Ultimate Golf' and given more power, but can this facelifted Volkswagen Golf R knock the imperious Ford Focus RS from its perch?

Sorry VW but a classic own goal and missed opportunity

Why? because no uplift in power output to say the collaboration with Oettinger to give a warrantied Stage 1 tune along with body panel offered previously but combined with improved braking and and handling / ride settings. Golf R owners would like a retrofitted package for MK7,as the uplift could be simply ECU'D with out major mechanical change which is probably the route the mk7.5 has gone with 296 bhp upped to 306bhp. Very poor especial after the hype two year ago with the showing of R400,now considered to have been dropped but never confirmed by VW.
