Audi has clearly chosen not to wreck a winning formula - its new TT, seen here for the first time in official images released in Germany this evening, is a subtle evolution of its successful predecessor.
The new car is 137mm longer than the original TT, and 78mm wider. But its side profile looks remarkably similar - a back-handed tribute to the popularity of the current car. The new TT lacks the rear lip spoiler that was introduced following concerns about the original car's high-speed stability. But a spoiler does extend from the tailgate when it reaches 75mph.
Two engines are available initially - a front-wheel-drive, 2.0-litre TFSI model producing 200bhp, and a four-wheel-drive 3.2-litre V6 version pumping out 250bhp. The 2.0-litre model can hit 62mph in 6.4sec, while the V6 model performs the same feat in 5.7sec.
Options include parking sensors, 'cornering' headlights and magnetic ride dampers.
The new TT's interior retains several of the car's styling cues, most notably the circular centre air vents. It also gets a square-bottomed steering wheel (a la RS4) and . Its rear seats can be folded flat to boost luggage space from 290 to 700 litres.
Only the coupe is available at launch time, but Audi has already confirmed that a roadster model will be revealed shortly. The coupe should be seen in public for the first time at next week's New York motor show.
