Compact crossover priced alongside smaller supermini rivals

The new Nissan Juke will cost from £12,795 when it goes on sale in the UK in September.

The price puts it in direct competition with supermini rivals including the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and VW Volkswagen Polo, despite the Juke being larger and more generously equipped as standard.

The Juke’s entry-level petrol engine is a more powerful 115bhp version of the 1.6-litre unit found in the Nissan Note. The only diesel engine in the range is the 1.5 dCi unit, which produces 108bhp. Diesel Jukes cost from £15,145.

Both engines are only available with front-wheel drive; petrol models have an optional CVT gearbox, although both are fitted with manual ‘boxes as standard.

The range-topping Juke will be powered by a new 187bhp direct-injection petrol unit, available with both front- and all-wheel drive.

The front-drive model comes with a six-speed manual ‘box, while the all-wheel drive variant comes with a CVT ‘box with a torque vectoring system, a first for a car in this segment. The all-wheel drive range-topper costs from £19,995.

Three trim levels will be offered: Visia, Acenta and Tekna. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, air-con, sports seats ESP and six airbags.

Designed in the UK at Nissan’s Paddington Design Centre, the Juke uses SUV styling proportions to create a car that’s considerably wider and longer than a Micra, although at 1570mm high it’s only 30mm taller.

Inside, the car’s fascia is much more conventional than the exterior; the most striking feature is the centre console, which comes in body-coloured paint and is said to have been inspired by the fuel tank from a motorbike.

Underneath, the Juke uses a widened, lengthened version of the Renault Nissan Alliance B platform, also used in the Clio and Micra; it’s 2530mm wheelbase is 10cm longer, and the platform's extra width means it can accommodate wider tracks.

Suspension remains a MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear for the two-wheel drive versions, but unusually Nissan has decided to fit the four-wheel drive models with a new multi-link suspension at the rear. This should give the Juke handling to rival the class leaders'.

The Juke will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant and will replace the Nissan Micra on the production line.

I reckon Nissan will shift plenty of these

There are cars that I disliked at first sight but gradually grew on me. Nissan Juke, unfortunately, isn't one of them. That said, I have a feeling it will sell like hot cakes and the roads will be swamped by copycat mini SUV/Crossovers from almost every manufacturer within a couple of years.

If it's about 1300kg the front drive turbo will surprise a few hot hatch drivers ~140mph and 0-60 in ~7s
