Do you remember Renault denying that a cheaper, more basic version of the new Twingo was on the horizon? Here it is, then: the £7500 Twingo Extreme, which goes on sale in February. The new model undercuts the base Fiat 500 by £400. It gets a 1.2-litre, 59bhp petrol engine which returns 50.4mpg and 130g/km. The spec list is shorter than the rest of the Twingo range, which has attracted criticism in some quarters for taking the model upmarket. However, the Extreme still comes with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, driver and passenger airbags, remote central locking, radio/CD, front fog lights and electric front windows. Its bargain status is evident from the outside, though, thanks to its matt-black plastic door mirrors.Options will include an integrated Bluetooth handsfree system, Union Jack door handle graphics and wing badges, and racing stripes.
